Tell Governor Brown $5 Million for the Arts is a Great Investment!

Last night, the Legislature approved a budget that includes $5 million in funding for the California Arts Council!

We are asking your help ONE MORE TIME as increased funding for the California Arts Council this year approaches its final hurdle: Governor Jerry Brown’s signature.

Please communicate to the Governor your support for the Legislature’s $5 Million appropriation TODAY!

Here is a sample letter:

June 16, 2014

Governor Jerry Brown

State Capitol

Sacramento, CA

Subject:  California Arts Council $5 Million Appropriation – SUPPORT

Dear Governor Brown:

“As Governor in 1976, I helped form the California Arts Council on the basis that the arts are

central to the lives of Californians. My belief in the arts is still strong today – as our state’s artists

and creative communities are among the many features that make California a great place to live

and to visit….Thank you to the artists and cultural organizations who contribute to the

success and growth of our state.”  —Governor Jerry Brown, 2012-13 Annual Report of the California Arts Council

We could not be more pleased than to have a Governor who cared enough to start this agency 38 years ago and who openly reiterates his support for the importance of the arts today.

We understand that our state is still on the road to full recovery and that there are many priorities you have the responsibility of balancing.  But it’s also clear that you understand the vital role that the arts play in contributing to that recovery.

For over a decade, California has ranked near the bottom of all the states in arts funding.  This has severely impacted our state’s arts ecology and its ability to improve the lives of our citizens.

The $5 million budget appropriation for the California Arts Council approved by the Legislature is an important first step toward enabling California’s arts community to strengthen our state’s creative workforce, stimulate innovation, fuel economic development, mitigate recidivism, remedy truancy, uplift, inspire and heal people in all of our state’s communities.

There could hardly be a more outstanding return from such a small investment in California’s future.

Please renew your four decade-long belief in the power of the arts by sustaining the Legislature’s desired budget level for the California Arts Council.

Thank you for your commitment to a better California.

Sincerely,
