On Wednesday, April 15 on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento, Californians for the Arts will honor four Legislative “Arts Champions” (pictured from left to right):  Senator Ben Allen (D-26th District, Santa Monica), Senator Jim Nielsen (R-4th District, Gerber), Assemblymember Ian Calderon (D-57th District, Whittier), Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D-46th District, Los Angeles).

As Chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Arts, Senator Allen is at the forefront of advocating for the state’s arts ecology.  On April 15, at 9:30 a.m., Senator Allen is convening the committee for a hearing on “The Arts and Creative Industries:  An Updated Assessment of California’s Creative Economy.” Additionally, Senator Allen is the principal co-author in the Senate of ACR 46, a resolution favoring a “substantial increase” in funding for the California Arts Council, our state’s arts agency.

Senator Nielsen has been a longtime supporter of the arts and a strong advocate for funding the California Arts Council, our state’s arts agency.  During last year’s Joint Budget Committee hearing, Senator Nielsen spoke eloquently about the value of the arts and arts education, and urged his colleagues to increase funding for the agency.  In the final Budget, the California Arts Council received its first General Fund budget increase in more than ten years.

As Chair of the Legislature’s Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media (AESTIM), Asm. Calderon is actively advocating for the state’s arts ecology, and sponsored arts funding legislation during the last session.  He has authored (with Asm. Adrin Nazarian and Sen. Ben Allen) ACR 46, a resolution favoring a “substantial increase” in funding for the California Arts Council (CAC), which won unanimous approval this week by the AESTIM.  Asm. Calderon also sits on the Joint Committee on the Arts.

Asm. Nazarian has been a leading advocate of increased state investment in the arts since being elected to the Legislature in 2012, sponsoring arts funding bills each session.  He has authored (with Asm. Ian Calderon and Sen. Ben Allen) ACR 46, a resolution favoring a “substantial increase” in funding for the California Arts Council (CAC), which won unanimous approval this week by the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media, on which he also sits.  Also this week, the Legislature’s Budget Subcommittee 4 on State Administration, which Asm. Nazarian chairs, approved a motion that the California Arts Council budget be increased to $10 million from the general fund in the next budget year.

Each will be presented with a signed work of art glass (pictured above) by Santa Ana artist Caleb Siemon.
